A new digital tool is helping Europe’s circular economy move forward. The Industrial Symbiosis Stakeholder Directory, developed under the LIAISE COST Action (CA22110), has been launched as a central matchmaking and collaboration platform for organisations across Europe working toward resource efficiency and circularity.
Industrial symbiosis enables the by-products or unused materials of one company to become valuable inputs for another. This approach reduces landfill waste, lowers emissions, and improves cost efficiency. However, one of the main barriers to adopting industrial symbiosis has long been a lack of visibility and connection among potential partners.
The newly launched directory aims to fill this gap by serving as a specialised networking platform and searchable database, connecting companies, researchers, and policymakers.
“This tool is not just another contact list—it is an active ecosystem hub designed to bring together all key players needed to make industrial symbiosis work,” explains Dr. Apostolos Michopoulos, one of the creators behind the directory.
Profiles include industrial and commercial enterprises listing their resource inputs and outputs, research institutions offering technical expertise, and public bodies helping shape enabling policy frameworks. Users can filter partners by location or sector to identify collaboration opportunities that reduce waste and improve resource efficiency.
The Industrial Symbiosis Stakeholder Directory offers benefits for all involved:
The initiative is part of the LIAISE COST Action, an EU-funded research network promoting collaboration among researchers, industry, and policymakers to accelerate industrial symbiosis across Europe.
